On Sunday 19th August 2018 the Middleton Railway participated in the 5th Leeds Classic Bus Runday, entitled "On the Buses", which this year was organised jointly by Black Prince Buses and Classic Connections (who operate the Wallace Arnold heritage fleet).

Bus Run Day Poster

This year the buses just ran on one route, which connected four of the City's museums, as follows:

  • Thwaite Mills Watermill (which hosted a display of vehicles, including classic cars);
  • the Middleton Railway;
  • Thackray Medical Museum (which was taking part for the first time); and
  • Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills.

The route also included Leeds City bus station (York Street stop F7 for buses towards Armley Mills, or stop F4 for buses towards the Middleton Railway and Thwaite Mills) and Leeds railway station (stop Z1 in Bishopgate Street for buses towards Armley Mills, or stop P5 in City Square for buses towards the Middleton Railway and Thwaite Mills).

All the participating museums, including the railway, were open all day to receive visitors and all sites allowed free "park and ride" facilities for visitors.

The first bus services departed at about 10.00. At the end of the day buses connected with the 16.25 arrival, and the last ones departed from the railway about 30 minutes later.

All these heritage services were free and were operated by a variety of vintage and classic buses. There was an A5 souvenir timetable that was available to purchase on the day and volunteers were encouraging visitors to purchase one. This was not obligatory, but the funds raised would help towards the high cost of staging the event.
